Modern art:  art that is original, new, advanced, difficult, in opposition to tradition or contemporary norms; avant-garde art.

Questions:

  • What does it mean to be avant-garde?  
  • Once the avant-garde is integrated into museums and art history text books does the idea lose its power?
  • What are the politics of the avant-garde?
  • What is the relationship between style and the avant-garde?
  • How important is originality?  Can something be both original and a repetition?
